The Food Project names Acting Executive Director

On October 6, 2014, James Harrison, currently North Shore Regional Director, will become the Acting Executive Director, replacing Selvin Chambers who is leaving to join The Trustees of Reservations. 

Involved in sustainable agriculture for over a decade, Mr. Harrison will serve as Executive Director until the Board of Trustees identifies a new permanent executive director.

The Food Project - Celebrating Spring

The annual Fall Fundraiser for The Food Project has been moved to the Spring as a strategic change.  Chairman of the Board, Dylan Sanders, said the Board reassessed its timing of fundraising.

 at The Food Project's annual cycle of activities and recognized that a Spring event would serve as a kick-off to the important activities of the summer:  farming and youth programs.

Free Community Event at the Strand 8/27/14

Huntington Theatre Company and the City of Boston present a free community event Wednesday, August 27 at the Strand Theatre in conjunction with the Huntington's upcoming play,  “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”. 

Hosted by WCVB-TV’s Director of Public Affairs and Community Services, Karen Holmes Ward,  the evening will feature a screening of the Academy Award-winning 1967 film Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner and will be  followed by a conversation with director David Esbjornson and actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner of the Huntington’s production. 

The event is FREE and open to the public. RSVP is encouraged.

The Boston Home - $25k Grant from The Boston Foundation

In 2013 The Boston Home received a start-up grant to pursue a durable medical equipment reuse program in partnership with the Mass Rehabilitation Commission.


To continue and to support that program, The Boston Home has received a grant of $25,000 from The Boston Foundation. This program has been characterized as "public policy that works."

Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre - Open Auditions for Children's Roles 2014 Nutcracker



José Mateo Ballet Theatre holds OPEN auditions in Cambridge (9/6), Duxbury (9/21), and Roxbury (9/13) for Children’s roles in its 27th annual production of The Nutcracker. 

Over 500 Children expected to audition for the most beloved holiday classic.  The production will take place in Cambridge, Duxbury and Dorchester.

José Mateo Ballet Theatre Opens 29th Season with 'Far Reaches'

José Mateo Ballet Theatre Opens its 29th Season with Far Reaches on October 10, 2014. Be Moved! Two gripping Mateo ballets plus a highly anticipated world premiere. 

The Sanctuary Theater offers a close up view with the dancers with cabaret-style seating and cocktails during the show. The performance space is located in the Old Cambridge Baptist Church, a National Historic Landmark.

BPL - Back to School: Geography in the Classroom - Exhibition 9/2/14 - 1/25/15

The Boston Public Library's most recent map center exhibition opens 9/2/14 in the Norman B. Leventhal Map Center and focuses on the variety of formats used to engage American school children in developing their geographic skills. 
The display includes 40 maps, globes, games, atlases and related objects, going back hundreds of years.

In its sixteenth year of providing fresh, local, affordable produce to Dudley area residents, The Food Project offers the edibles available that week from its farms and local sources in all colors - greens (collards, lettuce, peppers ..), reds (apples, beets, tomatoes ...) and yellows (squash, honey, carrots, ...) and much more.  Every Thursday, 3-7pm, June - October.

Pilgrim Church Saturday Flea Market

In operation for decades, this open air market - an institution in the Uphams Corner community is for the adventurous shopper.  Sporting vendors and customers whose primary languages are other than English, the market offers clothing, housewares, electronics, CD, books and more.


Vendors have a no-nonsense attitude having put up with customers wanting "something for nothing" for too long but are still willing to haggle and "offer deals."  Well worth even the atmosphere, this mini-shopping mall is a great  way to spend a Saturday morning - 540 Columbia Rd in Dorchester.

Boston Main Streets Gala 2014 Awards 6/26/14 at the Strand Theatre

On June 26, 2014, Mayor Martin J. Walsh, together with Department of Neighborhood Development Director Sheila Dillon and emcee Susan Wornick, attended the 18th annual Boston Main Streets Awards. 


Mayor Walsh presented awards to the Boston Main Streets volunteers and businesses of the year, and highlighted significant new funds from the Boston Main Streets Foundation.  The ceremony at the historic Strand Theatre in Dorchester, featured entertainment by the Fiddle Head Theatre’s cast of Aida.

Main Streets Awards - Photos at the Strand

Boston Main Streets holds their annual Awards Ceremony every year in late June.  This year, at the Strand Theatre, the staff spared nothing to provide a remarkable setting for enjoying how pervasive the Main Street movement is in the life of the City.



Seventy-five (75) photos of happy, enthusiastic people who were most willing to pose and pose again.  You could count on three fingers the number of people who said, "No."

Elderly Volunteer Property Tax Work-Off Program Offered by City of Boston

Senior homeowners may apply to work off their property taxes through volunteer activities for the City of Boston. 

This program falls under the aegis of the Assessing Department but is  being promoted by the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services.

Community-Minded Proposals Sought for
Dudley Greenhouse

The Dudley Greenhouse Advisory Committee is actively seeking proposals for use of the greenhouse that promotes food production and sharing cultures and resources. 




These can include proposals for workshops, sharing events and fun times as well, especially as it engages everyone in the community.  Examples included of projects from prior years.
