Pilgrim Church Saturday Flea Market

In operation for decades, this open air market - an institution in the Uphams Corner community is for the adventurous shopper.  Sporting vendors and customers whose primary languages are other than English, the market offers clothing, housewares, electronics, CD, books and more.

Pilgrim Church Flea Market

Vendors have a no-nonsense attitude having put up with customers wanting "something for nothing" for too long but are still willing to haggle and "offer deals."  Well worth even the atmosphere, this mini-shopping mall is a great  way to spend a Saturday morning - 540 Columbia Rd in Dorchester.

An UP Market that's Right for Uphams Corner

UP MarketThe UP Market Planning Committee has targeted upscale arts-oriented and handcrafted products in a neighborhood (Uphams Corner) where the "regulars" are used to bargains.

Review of the poor UP Market results from 6/21 raises concerns for the market's viability in the current format.  With no market research, the Planning Committee seems to be operating this new complex business startup more on "hope" and the good will of the (very few) vendors.

Does the current "branding" make sense for anyone - vendors and customers alike?

UP Market, June 2014 - Vendors, Managers and Products but Customers?  Not Many

The June 21, 2014 UP Market in Uphams Corner had everything in its favor - vendors, organizers, equipment, products and beautiful weather.  Only one thing was missing.

UP Market June 21, 2014

The Paraiso Plaza setting, how vendors presented their products and the quality of the products, the welcoming table - all very professionally done.  "Where's everybody?"  That's the challenge for the next UP Market in July.  How to get the customers to show up with $$$.

Toni Rose Reads "Poetic" at UP Market

Poet, Toni Rose, read her poem "Poetic" from the DJ's mic at the June 21 UP Market.  As her voice carried rhythmically across the vendor plaza, we all stopped to listen to an accomplished spoken word artist in Uphams Corner.

By Toni Rose

Poetry mimics all genres of art
A tone of lyrical notes
Flows through the ear
Captured attention
Sweet melody

A dance so intense
drawn in
partnership using
one to lead and
the other

Uphams Corner Main Street Fundraiser 2014 - Aesthetic, Tasty, Not-so-Tasty

UCMS FundraiserThe Uphams Corner Main Street fundraiser drew an enthusiastic crowd to enter the Strand Theatre's stage in lounge style - complete with a full bar table and tender and a banquet table of locally prepared food.

The silent auction items, even if you didn't bid, were great for imagining.  Unfortunately, the appetizers were 'fake' food - disappointing.  Congratulations to everyone who helped make this year's event a success.
