DSNI Community Summit - Generations of Change

BPL: Expanded Digital Offerings - Free Streaming Media Service

BPL Expanded OfferingsThe Boston Public Library has expanded its digital offerings to include a free streaming media service. 

All cardholders can now get easy access to up to ten downloads per month of thousands of movies, music and more. 

This is in response to a survey where library users said streaming content was their top request.

Uphams Corner Public Art Commission - Who is the Winner?

The Uphams Corner Public Art Commission project is an outcome of The Boston Foundation / ArtPlace endeavor.  Initial exploratory phases are complete.  Only the formal announcement of the winner remains.  After that, the work to develop the public art begins.

Announcement of the winner will be made at a community meeting on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 6-8pm at the Strand Theatre. 

Plan to come to meet the artist and determine how you can be involved in the community process about to begin.

Hub Theatre - Three days of rain'Three Days of Rain' by Tony Award winning playwright Richard Greenberg will open Hub Theatre Company's second season.

This modern-day masterpiece is the story of a dysfunctional family’s tumultuous relationships over the course of two generations.

Daniel Bourque directs a trio of Boston's finest actors, Marty Seeger Mason, Tim Hoover, and the Hub's Artistic Director, John Geoffrion.

Boston Ballet at the Strand 4/11/14

Tufts University Student on Assignment in Uphams Corner

Zuangchen ZhouTufts University student Zhuangchen Zhou is on assignment.  With heart and passion embedded in photography, he is getting to know  Uphams Corner with camera in hand.

His project is a little tougher than simple point and shoot photos of the people who live, work and travel here  He is hoping to photograph them in authentic settings including in their homes.  And he is looking forward to riding with the police.

Dunya - Tribute to Turkish Music - Truth to Power at the NEC

Dunya Music EnsembleAn ensemble of musicians from the musician's collective known as Dunya performed Turkish music to an enthusiastic audience on March 27, 2014.

Part of NEC's Music:  Truth to Power series, each program examines the importance of music in human struggle and how music takes form in the artistic expression of revolution. 

The NEC program consisted of a series of "songs" - poetry set to music - which touched on the centuries-long struggles of Turkish people as well as the beauty of the Turkish folk music.

Little Miss & Young Miss Dorchester Contests

Saturday March 10, 2014 - Winners Announced. 

Dorchester InsigniaThe winners of the two contests will be participating in the Dorchester Day Parade on 6/1/14.  Little Miss is for girls 7-9 years and Young Miss is for girls 10-12 years old

Applications must be submitted by May 1, 2014 and winners will be announced on Saturday, May 10 at the First Parish Church.

Windermere and Salcombe Now One-Way Streets

According to Steve Farrell, spokesperson for the Jones Hill Traffic Committee, the Boston Transportation Department made the conversion of two more streets on Jones Hill into one-way streets.

BTD posted the appropriate one-way signs on Friday, March 28, 2014 making Windermere and Salcombe one-way streets.

From Steve:  "Congratulations to all for successfully making our neighborhood a little bit safe for pedestrians and vehicles alike."  Everyone was invited to join in a celebration at the top of Windermere Friday evening "for a short - and well-deserved - celebration."

Uphams Corner WAG - Phase I Closes with a Future toward Phase II

Josh Fiala, ConsultantThe Uphams Corner WAG (Fairmount Initiative Working Advisory Group) held its final (15th) meeting at the Kroc Center on Monday, March 24, 2014. 

The meeting well exceeded its scheduled length of one hour for several reasons.  Both WAG and community members took great interest in the Open House results presented by the consultant and Chief John Barros stopped in for a surprise visit with 'good news' for the Uphams Corner WAG.

Annunciation Greek Cathedral - Treasure in our Midst

The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Boston is beautiful and the church services, mysterious.   Bearing no resemblance to the churches from my past - Protestant - what attracted me was the music,  the role of the choir in the liturgy and the people.
