Kroc Center Culinary Arts Program
On
January 29, 2014, UC News had the pleasure of learning about the Kroc
Center's Culinary Arts Program – in the classroom and in the
kitchen. An article is forthcoming but until then, we invite you
to enjoy the photos.
Executive Chef, Timothy Tucker, is dearly loved by his students
and that was evident in the classroom. I, the newest student,
learned about smoke points, cooking oils, how to not burn your house
down from the kitchen. Class is held five days a week and following
morning theory, they adjourn to the Kroc Center's professional kitchen
to prepare lunch.

Bank of America - Uphams Corner Branch to Close 3/21/14
In a customer letter dated 12/6/2013, Bank of American announced that
the Uphams Corner branch would close Friday, March 21, 2014.
The letter reflects a coup-d'etat attitude toward Uphams Corner with no
consultation - no warning - in advance.
It is incumbent on members of this community to rally, to speak up, to
call upon every mechanism to stop the "rollover" and convert it into a
change that is meaningful for the community.

Lost Wallet Goes Home for Christmas
The
amazing story of how a lost wallet goes home for Christmas with its
contents in tact. A teenager loses a wallet with $160 inside
while an Uphams corner resident finds a wallet with $160 inside.
The "finder" looks for the wallet's owner to no avail until just before
Christmas when she finds one more number to call. What a
wonderful Christmas for everyone!

Stop & Shop - Tale of Two Receipts
 One
shopper's tale of two receipts - the before and the after, the receipt
you couldn't read unless you already knew what you had purchased and
its cousin - the crisply printed and completely legible one.
It's also the story of a high volume retailer that apparently doesn't
think the customer needs a receipt that can be read and what to do
about it (if you have the time and patience to persevere).

be and food justice in a totally different way.
If you have not had a chance to learn about food justice, this is your
opportunity. If you have, the workshop is still worth attending
to get to know the youth who are seeking to change the world one leaf
of lettuce at a time.

Rainbow Apparel Fails to Shovel Sidewalks
Rainbow
Apparel at 745 Dudley St remains one of the worst businesses in Uphams
Corner for complying with the snow removal ordinance. The Uphams Corner
Improvement Association (UCIA) waited for two days before filing a
complaint.
Their record is poor after every snowfall and this has been true since
they opened in 2010. A pedestrian's ability to walk in front of
their business in 2014 is close to non-existent. If you do
attempt to following along the one-foot-path created by other
pedestrians, there is a good possibility you will fall.

Jacquelyn Mitchard a Big Hit at Author Talk
On
Tuesday, February 4, 2014, the Uphams Corner Library hosted NY Times
best-selling author, Jacquelyn Mitchard. With her young adults
book also including the art of Parkour, the library invited Motion Revolution - a Parkour teaching center, to participate.
Many adult residents attended but so did the youth from upstairs, the
Bird Youth Center. Most of the questions came from the youth,
both interested in the Parkour feats and the stories that Ms. Mitchard
tells.
Lasting beyond closing time, the event was considered a success.
An in-depth article is forthcoming but until then, enjoy the many, many
photos on the UC News Facebook page.

Casey Overpass - Asking Mayor Walsh to Reassess
Letter to the Editor by Larry Fabian - an appeal to the new Mayor Walsh administration.
Construction is imminent for starting on a controversial MassDOT
at-grade plan for the Casey Overpass which even Mayor Walsh, while a
State Rep, had called for a moratorium about.
A city-coalition has formed to defeat "MassDOT's naive at-grade
scheme that looked so good to elitist groups." Mr. Fabian is
appealing to Mayor Walsh to conduct an honest analysis of the Casey
Overpass issue before it is too late.

Poem, "Songs of Life," Dedicated to
Kroc Fitness Center
'Songs of Life' is a poem dedicated to the Kroc Center's Fitness Center.
The poem was written based on a methodology suggested by the prolific
poet and Pulitzer Prize winner, Stephen Dunn and seeks to capture the
essence of the people, equipment and what it is like to work out there.
The poem's structure is designed to imitate the sense of endless
repetition. Breaking stride, "Songs of Life" closes with a
delightful surprise.
