Upham's Corner InSight into the News

From the Editor's Desk:
Save the Casey Overpass and Preserve the Sense of Village

Casey Overpass designDec 13, 2012

The Casey Overpass has been in the design stages for at least 1.5 years and a design has been selected. The train is moving down the tracks and is unlikely to change direction. That doesn't mean that alternative ideas aren't still important to put out onto the table.

It is from a sense of nostalgia on how much freedom and how many looking glass options the Casey Overpass provided my family growing up.  It is also from an abhorrence of the California Highway look that bends our position in favor of rebuilding the Casey Overpass into a modern, useful and structure that seeks to serve all segments of the population.

St. Kevin's School
Mum's the Word - St. Kevin's Developer not Talking to the Community
Dec 10, 2012

Since the April 24, 2012 community meeting, the St. Kevin's developer has put some effort into the property.  They have taken pre-development soil samples and fixed a drainage problem.  They 'evicted' a homeless couple living on the property and have applied for funds with the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD).

What the Planning Office has not done is maintain a dialog with members of the community, especially those residents who are within 'earshot' or 'eyeshot' of the 2.7 acre parcel.' And they have not responded to issues raised by the community at the April 2012 meeting.

Video Poem "Death in the Morning" - Liam Day
Nov 2012

Dorchester North Burying GroundPoet and essayist, Liam Day (Jones Hill), traces his ancestry back more than 200 years to cemetery plots in a tiny village in Ireland where his mother grew up. Steeped in a sense of history and his Irish roots, Liam is attracted to the legacy and strength of the Dorchester North Burying Ground in the heart of Uphams Corner

With its four centuries of men and women buried there, that burial site has been calling him to do more than walk past - day after day - staring in through the wrought iron fence at the ancient gravestones.

In cooperation with film artist Camilo Cardenas, the video poem "Death in the Morning" that proclaims the beauty of life and its terminal nature as well, was born.

Resident Gets Yard Hosed and Lesson from Fire Department
Open burning of LeavesNov 2012

The smell of smoke was so strong that two Monadnock Street residents became alarmed.  Who's house was on fire?

Burning leaves is still allowed in some sections of the Commonwealth but not in Boston.  You may think that burning leaves is easier than bagging them, but a visit from the Fire Department may teach you otherwise.
