Grove
Hall Ice Cream Social Better than Last Year
8/24/12
Better even than last year's event, the 2012 Grove Hall Library
Ice
Cream Social was delicious, well organized and very popular with the
kids.
Freshly scooped cones of vanilla or chocolate ice cream quickly
melted into waiting mouths, very little of it lost to falling drops of
sweet cream.
This year the serving area was moved further into the library and away
from the circulation desk, thus allowing library patrons to continue to
check out books without being surrounded by a crowd of youth.
Long lines weren't daunting. They all knew that at the end was a
delicious mound of either chocolate or vanilla ice cream.

"The Heat" Heats up Norfolk Ave in Uphams Corner
August 26, 2012
Since early July, "The Heat" has been filming in Boston with Sandra
Bullock groupies following her every move. Sunday August 26 was a
well publicized filming date and a crowd pleaser as well, as the
pyrotechnic geniuses provided an excellent performance of a car
explosion, including fire, smoke and final fire extinguisher.
Excellent set of photos showing the preparation, residents and visitors
out to watch and the explosion itself. Can't wait to see the
movie.

Adult
Education Center Sorely Needed in Uphams Corner
September 12, 2012
To: Uphams Corner
News
I am sending a letter of hope, vision and concern to Mayor Menino about
the need for adult education opportunities in Uphams Corner, a section
of
the city that also has a low educational attainment rate.
Can you
please publish my letter and share it with the community? Thank you in
advance.
Shemiram Fabian
Dear Mayor Menino:
Thank you so much for all you do to improve the quality of life of the
people in the City of Boston.
These days I have been inspired, and motivated by the speeches given by
our Democratic leaders at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) who
have been laying the pivotal facts, challenges, and hopes for a better
future for this country.
We heard amongst other topics how EDUCATION is
the most important, and vital subject that brings change, hope,
prosperity, and success.
Uphams
Corner has a high immigrant population - people who have come
here in search of a
better life. Many don't speak English and have low skills and find it
hard to obtain employment in 21st century work opportunities.
Yet even a little bit of
education or job training makes such a huge difference in stabilizing
people's lives
financially - in liberating them. So I am asking you for help. Uphams Corner
needs an ADULT
EDUCATION
CENTER, where people can learn vocational skills or study art, music,
business etc.... so that
people can be inspired, live creative lives and make a better Boston.

Uphams
Corner Health Festival - the Best Ever
Sep 8, 2012
The 2012 Uphams Corner Health Festival, marking 25 years
of health fairs to the community, experienced an excellent
turnout.
The health center achieved their goal of encouraging the community to
take care of
their health: blood pressure, weight, cholesterol and diabetes
and to have fun in the process - healthy and delicious food,
friendly
staff and fun activities for the kids.
Roksana Pirog, Marketing and Promotions Manager at the Uphams Corner
Health Center, believes that over 400 people participated which is
record
setting. "The flu clinic received fives times
more requests for flu shots than it has in the past. The
community is taking the initiative about their own
personal health."

Looking

technology and entrepreneurship- based subjects that could

William Hewlett and David Packard of HP, and a number of recognizable
technology enthusiasts.
Stanford encourages students to start businesses, and offers courses to
that end. For the16 free courses being offered in Fall 2012, students
can take them online - courses in business, entrepreneurship,

Matthew
Mendes Back to School BBQ - 7th Annual
Aug 4, 2012
The 7th annual Matthew Mendes Back to School BBQ took place in
the back lot of the Humphrey's Artist Studios.
Partnering with The North American Islamic Center's Relief Fund
Division, the sponsors distributed hundreds of school supplies to local
kids.
Mixing up cultures in recognition that violence doesn't ever appear to
discriminate, is something that means a lot to all the organizers
involved in this yearly event.

Andreas
and Willie are Gone
September 8, 2012
Willie Torres and Andreas got along - sharing a
commonality of alcohol, telling jokes, hanging out and passing
out.
Earlier this summer, the EMT's took Andreas Achevaria away twice in two
weeks - out cold from drinking. Then the police took him away for
hitting a woman with a brick.
On September 8, Andreas wasn't around to take care of his friend,
Willie, and watch him as the final bell tolled. Around 6pm,
we got the news that Willie had died of a heart attack.

Carpenters
Apprenticeship - Schedule of Opportunities
Fall 2012 and Winter 2013
A Carpenters Apprenticeship is a training program. Earn wages
while you learn to become a skilled carpenter. Combining classroom
studies, you will have on-the-job training under a trade
professional supervisor.
Much like a college education, it takes several years to become fully
trained in the trade that you choose. Unlike college, though, as an
apprentice you will earn while you learn. At first, you will make less
money than skilled workers; but as you progress, you will get regular
raises. Once you have mastered the craft, you will receive professional
wages.
