Greater Boston House Concerts: Barbara
Lieurance, Pianist
Sep 15, 2012
Pianist
Barbara Lieurance will be playing the "bowed piano" opening the
2012-2013 season for the Greater Boston House Concerts. Known for her
innovative
performances and her daring programming, Ms. Lieurance brings new music
to concerts halls around North America and Europe and, in September, to
Uphams Corner.
In this program Ms. Lieurance champions the compositional tour-de-force
“Rhapsodies” by C. Curtis-Smith – the first piece to ever be written
for bowed piano – along with a new commission inspired by the
Rhapsodies by Canadian composer John Oliver. Other music includes the
jazzy Russian virtuosity of Gubaidulina and the beautiful melodies of
Brahms.

Dessa Eason -
Mourning the Loss of her Son, Jovany
Sep 3, 2012
It's August 20, 2012 and Dessa Eason is still mourning the loss of her
son, Jovany Eason, murdered three years ago, August 2, 2009. She felt
overwhelmed looking at the photos. Just to see the people that
were there at the memorial this year - adults, kids and the youth
- a mother's loss but a loss for the youth as well.
Dessa now talks with other parents who have lost their children and
comforts them in a way that only someone who also has lost a child can.
She believes the shock of Jo-Jo's death has stopped a lot of the kids
in this area from repeating this type of violence. Getting these kids
off the street is a rallying cry for Dessa - "so they don't have
thoughts of viiolence in their heads."

Grove
Hall Ice Cream Social Better than Last Year
8/24/12
Better even than last year's event, the 2012 Grove Hall Library
Ice
Cream Social was delicious, well organized and very popular with the
kids.
Freshly scooped cones of vanilla or chocolate ice cream quickly
melted into waiting mouths, very little of it lost to falling drops of
sweet cream.
This year the serving area was moved further into the library and away
from the circulation desk, thus allowing library patrons to continue to
check out books without being surrounded by a crowd of youth.
Long lines weren't daunting. They all knew that at the end was a
delicious mound of either chocolate or vanilla ice cream.

SNI Meeting Sparsely Attended
Aug 28, 2012
Three residents attended the August 2012 SNI meeting. Andrus
Knassus substituted for
Matt Feeney from the DA's office. Residents discussed quality of
life issues including how some businesses open til 11pm or later are
keeping the neighborhood "noisy" and problematic until quite late.
Everyone felt it would be good to get these businesses to attend an SNI
meeting to talk about night time quality of life issues. The
September meeting will be a walk through with the location as yet to be
determined.

Dunkin'

Dunkin
Donuts is "everybody's" favorite coffee shop. Found within
walking
distance of almost all urban environments, DD serves coffee that is
predictable and consistent. You already know what you are
planning to
buy as you make your way to the back of the long lines in the
store.
Goal? Make that "thirsty" feeling fade.
Dunkin'
Donuts is a Massachusetts based company in a state with an eco-friendly
philosophy and operating policies. Yet DD persists in the use of
Styrofoam cups.

Integrity and the Ryan Campaign - Reminding Ourselves
August 31, 2012
Regardless of which political camp you inhabit or on which fence you
are
precariously perched, there is a need for honesty, integrity, high
standards and a commitment to truth.
DailyKos
has created an interesting and long list of media articles about
Senator Paul Ryan's speech during the RNC convention, putting him into
the camp of "Lyin' Ryan."
This is not intended to "take out" Ryan but rather to call attention to
a broader issue - the need for greater
honesty in all of our dealings with others. Politicians, in
particular, in a democracy, are charged with representing the people
who elect them, not making up the truth.
To what extent, in this moneyed era, has truth-telling, facts and
balanced investigation been replaced
by the long-arm of the wealthy dictating the goal and how to get
there?
As a politician on the way to the finish line, you must give the
impression you are leading the people and representing their views. To
do that, you may have to resort to emotional rhetoric to convince your
constituents how to think and so they really believe YOU represent
them.
This is true for anyone who needs an
inexhaustible supply of funds to carry out a successful election, be it
democrat or republican.
A reminder as we walk our way through life that we need to deal with
others honestly and with high integrity. "Should I treat them the
way they treat me?" he asked of his advisor recently. "Never,"
was
the answer. "Hold high to your standards. Prevail."
DailyKos list of media articles about Paul Ryan's
speech.
Seventh
Grader Helps Stop Ban on Plastic Bags
Aug 27, 2012
Not Uphams Corner but still worth reading about.
Seventh Grader, Abby Goldberg, learned that no matter your age, you can
make a difference.
As part of a 7th grade environmental awareness class, she planned to to
convince her village board to ban plastic bags but found out that a
bill was moving through Illinois' legislature to prevent cities and
towns from enacting bans like this. She started a Change.org
petition and got 174,500 people to sign asking Governor Quinn to stop
this law. He listened.
