Upham's Corner InSight
into the News
Thought of the Day: "It is Memorial Day."
The first recorded
celebration of what became Memorial Day took place
in Charleston South Carolina in 1865.
Freed enslaved Africans
founded
Decoration Day by celebrating at the Washington Race Course which had
been used as a temporary Confederate prison camp for captured Union
soldiers. Nationwide observances quickly caught on in the North.
Beginning in 1866 the South planned events as a result of associations
established to care for cemeteries for Confederate soldiers and to
erect monuments as a way of remembering the Confederate
tradition.
For over 50 years northern states praised the Union soldiers while
southern states mourned the loss of Confederate soldiers. Just
before WWI the two sides forgot and the nation united its focus on the
soldiers. sacrifices away from the issues.

Remembering
Oh, sweet words of valor and selflessness
Come, speak to us with a balm of healing.
Help us celebrate this day, Memorial Day,
Dedicated to our fallen heroes,
From war or illness, accident or age,
Whose lives were given but not in vain.
Clear our minds that we may listen
To tributes honoring our brothers and sisters
Watch ceremonies of military flare and marching bands
Stand with people in solidarity and strength
Kneel at gravesides in humility and prayer
And never, ever forget.

Not a Celebration
of War
Rev. John Odams -
Pilgrim Church
Memorial
Day is not a celebration of war. It is a
time to remember and a time to heal.
Experiencing
the pain of loss, we forget that we,
too, will join the
ranks of those who have gone to the other side.
Looking
to those who have gone before us is looking
to our place of
origin. We are a continuation of the
past, not just the next volume. Healing
comes out of remembering the past.
