Uphams Corner Health Festival 2012 - the Best Ever

The 2012 Uphams Corner Health Festival, marking 25 years of health fairs to the community, experienced an excellent turnout.  The health center achieved their goal of encouraging the community to take care of their health:  blood pressure, weight, cholesterol and diabetes and to have fun in the process – healthy and delicious food, friendly staff and fun activities for the kids.

The Uphams Corner Health Center has been operational for 41 years, with the health fair going on for 25 years.

Roksana Pirog, Marketing and Promotions Manager at the Uphams Corner Health Center, had an important role in the Health Festival.  As Chair of the Health Fair Committee, she was ultimately responsible for recruiting the vendors, making sure they were set up, promoting the event throughout the community and taking care of all last minute problems.

She believes that the event drew over 400 people which is record setting.  "The day started out stressful, as you can imagine," she said, "but seeing the joyous kids, the balloon animals and the face painting made me so happy."  The flu clinic received fives times more requests for flu shots than it has in the past and what that tells her is that "the community is taking the initiative about their own personal health."

What also struck her as very positive was "the presence of so many multi-generational households in the Uphams Corner area from the youngest kids through grandparents and beyond."

"We met our goals," Roksana stated.  "We had a bigger turnout than before, our band was amazing and absolutely brought in new people to the Strand.  Our health screenings were in full swing! We had people take advantage of all of the services we offered, from height/weight/BMI screenings, to cholesterol checks, to the flu clinic, which was fabulous."

She added a note of perspective about the purpose of the health fair.  "As much fun as it was, the community’s health is especially important. Next year the health fair is going to be even bigger, I hope."

Shauna Solares representing Network Health said she really enjoyed the experience:  "A lively and upbeat group of people.  It was a good turnout and a fun atmosphere.  Lots of people were interested in learning more about Network Health," and she is definitely planning to come back.

Max MacCarthy, Executive Director from Main Street said: "Great!" much like Tony the Tiger.  With his inviting smile, he described the day as "festive, with lots of energy, music, food and community.  You could see that on the street, and it was inviting to the public."  Max was referring to Gerason, the Cape Verdean band playing in the recessed entry area fully open to the street.  Their music is why Max said: "Uphams Corner has come alive!"

From the Uphams Corner Health Center Dental Department came Zuzanna Mendez who is the dental director and who, with great enthusiasm, talked about oral health with anyone who would listen.  "Did you get your free toothpaste and brush?"  "It was even better this year than last year," she said of the people who came to her table.

JayPix Belmer, owner of "Moment of Flavor Photography and Design," said the word that best described her day was "fun." She met a lot of people in the community especially the younger ones.  "I showed them my photography books and talked to them about what inspires me."  It’s the undiscovered people that inspire JayPix to want to photograph them and she told them so:  "You inspire me because you are as yet undiscovered.  I am going to discover you through my photography."  What gives JayPix passion in life is the people, and the Health Festival was the perfect opportunity to immerse herself in her passion.
