Holiday Party at the Strand

At their November 7 general meeting, the Upham's Corner Improvement Association voted on having a holiday party.  As a result they organized one at the Strand in conjunction with Boston's scheduled Tree Lighting on Sat Nov 26 and Main Street's Small Business Saturday the same day.  The party was a great success and fun for all with gifts, healthy food, the Upham's Corner Carolers and Santa's Trolley arriving just on time to light the tree.

Pedestrian Safety in Upham's Corner

Recently at meetings in Upham's Corner, residents discussed pedestrian safety and identified what they call "a dangerous crosswalk"  in the very heart of the business district. "Crossing Columbia Road from the Pilgrim Church to the Strand Theatre is a nightmare."

The Upham's Corner Improvement Association decided to take on this intersection as a project and contacted Upham's Corner News to do some investigation. This report looks at the conditions, problems, goals and solutions.  Included is a conversation with a representative of the Boston Transportation Department and word that the intersection is under review with a promised upgrade for pedestrian safety.

DAC Poetry Readings

New this year to the Dorchester Arts Collaborative (DAC) were readings held at the Pilgrim Church in Upham's Corner.  While most readings were poetry, some were prose and some were sung:  multi-language readings, the Dot Four Quartet, students from UMass and accomplished and published poets.

The Upham's Corner Improvement Association contribution was to gather together immigrant residents to read in their own languages:  Aramaic, Farci, Vietnamese, Cape Verdean Creole,  and Filipino.
