The snowstorm ended late Wednesday 1/12/2011.  The ordinance requires businesses and property owners to comply with the snow removal ordinance within 3-6 hours.  Photos were taken Friday morning which is well passed when the ordinance timeframe would go into effect.  For the most part businesses had done "just enough" if even that much.

Take a look at the areas of difficulty and imagine how little additional work would have created a truly pedestrian friendly city.  It isn't much.  What a difference it would make.

Bicycles are moving easily because the streets have been plowed.

Man in wheelchair waiting for the bus.  We watched as his friend struggled to lift his
wheelchair over the curb at CVS.  The handicap ramp was buried.

We asked this gentleman if it had been
difficult to get up the incline.
Yes, he said, very difficult.

This is the narrow path he was trying
to navigate with his cargo loader.
He was delivering product to a restaurant.

Bus arriving.  The path to get to the  bus consists of a narrow pedestrian  trodden path through the snow.
Snow Removal Issues 1/14/11
The path has a spot for a left foot and a right foot, if you can keep your balance on the ice.  It does not have room for much else.

Igreja Universal de Reino de Deus 763 Dudley Street.
The church has a rear parking lot
which is accessed via Virginia Street.

When they cleared the lot on 1/13/11,
their snow plow blocked both sides
 of the sidewalk.

As of 1/20/11 the sidewalks
were still blocked.

see how the snow is blocking the sidewalk on both sides.

Aaron's cleared a wide path to the street.
Snow Removal Issues 1/14/11
Aaron's did not clear a wide path
on either side of their entry way.

Side view - the path is clearly not 42".
Snow Removal Issues 1/14/11
Aaron's had both entry doors open
because they were moving furniture
out of the building to a waiting truck.
Snow Removal Issues 1/14/11
We had to shut both doors to
continue walking.

Ice patch in front of CVS.  This violates the ordinance because the ice/snow is not covered with sand or sawdust.

Sidewalk at the side of CVS.   Plowed at the very front closest to Dudley Street.

Looking a little worse at the back -  winding and narrow, not in compliance with the ordinance.

As we approach the parking lot in back,
the snow on the sidewalk is getting thicker.

And at the back, it hasn't been
shoveled at all.

You can't use the crosswalk at

The median striip between the two crosswalks is not plowed.
