SNI Nbhd Walk 6/21/11The Upham's corner SNI neighborhood walk took place on June 21, 2011 6:30 PM.  Starting out of the city school approximately 30 people including police officers, inspectional services, elected officials and neighborhood residents participated walk.

The hour and a half route taken is as follows:
  • City school to Dudley Street to Wendover.
  • Follow Wendover as it turns left and meets Humphreys Street.
  • Cross over to Harrow Street and follow that through Hillsboro to Groom Street
  • Right onto Humphreys Street then reverse route to Elder Street
  • Elder Street to Eastman then around to Cawfield St
  • Follow Cawfield St to Elder Street to Columbia Road
  • Columbia Rd to Holden Street, to Belden Street and back to City School

SNI Nbhd Walk 6/21/11 The group - as large as it was - attracted a lot of attention.  Residents on their porches, in the yard and walking around want to know what was going on.  Many were surprised and took the opportunity to contribute to the growing list of issues.  Some even joined the walk.

Types of issues identified are as follows:
  • abandoned and decrepit housing
  • housing in need of repair violating building code
  • property storing excess trash
  • property overgrown with weeds
  • at least four sets of group garages with a history of problems
  • graffiti on buildings
  • streets in need of sweeping with trash along the curbs
  • notorious problem properties with a history of police activity
Representatives from Carlos Henriquez, Tito Jackson, inspectional services and others took notes of problems being identified.  The next steps include the following:
  1. Create a combined list of problems and issues
  2. Reconvene on June 28 at The City School for the next SNI meeting
One participant spoke with conviction about the need for transparency and accountability.
  • What is going to happen with all the problems identified?
  • How do we know that they are really going to be worked on?
  • How can we easily find the status of the problems online?
