DAC Poetry Reading

On October 22, 2011 the Dorchester Arts Collaborative included an all-afternoon set of poetry readings at the Pilgrim Church as part of their Open Studios 2011.

The Upham's Corner Improvement Association (UCIA) organized a set of four multi-cultural and multi-language poetry readings.  Carol Perez read poetry in Aklanon, one of four languages from the Central Visayas of the Philippines.

My Country - the Philippines

Bayan Ko by Jose Corazon de Jesus (1929)

Ang bayan kong Pilipinas
Lupain ng ginto't bulaklak
Pag-ibig na sa kanyang palad
Nag-alay ng ganda't dilag.

At sa kanyang yumi at ganda
Dayuhan ay nahalina
Bayan ko, binihag ka
Nasadlak sa dusa.

Ibon mang may layang lumipad
kulungin mo at umiiyak
Bayan pa kayang sakdal dilag
Ang di magnasang makaalpas!

Pilipinas kong minumutya
Pugad ng luha ko't dalita
Aking adhika,
Makita kang sakdal laya.
My Country

My country, the Philippines
The Land of gold and flowers
The love that in its hand
Sacrifice splendor and virtue.

And of her modesty and beauty
The foreigners were enticed
My country, you were conquered
Slumbered  in grief.

A bird has A freedom to fly
Cage it and it will cry
Much more such a beautiful country
Wouldn't long to be free!

Philippines my beloved
Nest of my tears and deed
In my heart I desire
To see you are truly free.

Song: by Teodoro A. Agoncillo (1981)

Ang bayan ko tanging ikaw
Pilipinas kung mahal
Ang aking puso't buhay man
Sa iyo'y ibibigay

Tungkulin ko'y gagampanan
Ang lagi kang paglingkuran
Ang laya mo'y babantayan
Pilipinas kong hirang
Song: by Teodoro A. Agoncillo (1981)

I love my own native land
Philippines, my Philippines
To thee I give my heart and hand
Philippines, my Philippines.

the trees that crown thy mountains grand,
the seas that beat upon thy strand
Awake my heart to thy command,
Philippines, my Philippines
