Contemporary Urban Realism with Vincent Crotty

In the early part of the 20th Century, artists Robert Henri, George Bellows, John Sloan, and others from the "Ashcan School" took to the streets of New York and Philadelphia to find their subject matter, painting "en plein aire." Rather than looking for pretty parks and manicured gardens, they found inspiration in the ordinary places and everyday activities of urban life. This 5-week course will continue that approach. The naturally diverse grounds of the Dorchester Historical Society and surrounding streets will provide artists with a wide variety of subject matter. Each session will begin with theory, demonstrations, and discussions on light and color, followed by plein aire painting, and a final critique of students' work.

All levels welcome. Students must provide their own materials.

The class of 5 sessions beginning in mid-August and running through September from 2:00 - 7:00 on Saturdays will offer the opportunity to capture the differences in light, color and foliage through the change of season.  At 7:00, retire to the Society's patio and relax with refreshments and conversation. (If the group is willing, we can open this hour to the public, or host a sale of works created on the last day of the session.)

Group size will be limited to 12 and registration deadline is August 11th.  Cost for all sessions, including theory and critique and end-of-day refreshments $250.
