Problem Properties Appeals Board Boston City Hall, Room 708

One City Hall Square

Boston MA 02201

To Whom It May Concern:

The Executive Board of the John W. McCormack Civic Association, the boundaries of which are less than 1/4 mile away from Bakersfield Arms, strongly supports the Problem Properties Task Force in its decision to deem Bakersfield Arms a problem property. Furthermore, we feel that the City of Boston is right and just in billing the landlord $24,000 in order to recoup some of the cost of the 45-day aroundthe-clock police presence at the curb of Bakersfield Arms.

It has come to our attention that the landlord is appealing this bill. It is important to note that during the twelve months preceding the around-the-clock police presence, the landlord made little or no effort to resolve the issues at that property in spite of multiple drug deals, drug overdoses and other troubles, including a stabbing. We understand that the City gave the owner of this property a long time to resolve issues, but problems only ceased after extreme measures were taken, and after dozens of police and EMS calls in that twelve-month period. There have been none since the City took its action.

The Problem Properties Task Force was created to help ensure a positive quality of life for the residents of the City of Boston. Rescinding the assessment of this bill fails to hold the landlord accountable for her property and undermines the importance of why this Task Force was created. We therefore respectfully urge the Board to reject the landlord’s appeal.

Very truly yours,

Michael J. McColgan For the Executive Board
