Upham's Corner InSight into the News

The "Community Voices Initiative" at Uphams Corner News
Oct 24 2012

As a vehicle for the presentation of Community Voices and Community Conversation, Uphams Corner News was founded in 2010.  It is the people, each person, expressing their fundamental humanity and purpose that defines the real power of this country.

Uphams Corner, like all neighborhoods in Boston, has unique demographics and needs.  The individuality does not separate us because we are united within our stories.  Uphams Corner is a neighborhood of people whose stories lay the foundations for true humanity.  We want those stories told.  We want those voices heard.

I Love Uphams Corner

The Community Voices Initiative is simple.  Just tell us your story (in person, over the phone, in writing) in your own special words and we'll help you do the rest.  Add a photo or graphic image (or lots) and you're done.

Like a grass roots megaphone, the community is welcome to use Uphams Corner News to share news, ideas, visions, dreams, concerns and a sense of purpose, all of which will help take use closer to a better tomorrow.

Creativity Abounds at Dorchester Arts Collaborative Open Studios 2012
Dorchester Open StudiosOct 21, 2012

Dorchester Arts Collaborative Open Studios, was held at many public and private venues through out Dorchester on the weekend of Oct 19-21.

At First Parish Church, the busy, colorful and artistically eclectic 'arts community on display' felt welcoming. Smiling faces, beautiful displays of unique and original arts and crafts, friendly artists and stories that you could never know if you look only at the art.

Open Studios demonstrates the excitement of the arts community - those who make the art and those who appreciate the art.

Fort Point Open Studios - Discovering the Artists and their Art
Oct 20, 2012

Fort Point Open Studios More than 150 artists, crafts people, and designers living and working in Fort Point participated in the Open Studios 2012. The combined participation of galleries, performances and participatory art projects and the open studios/residences and businesses provided visitors an opportunity for several days of in-depth art immersion.

Because Fort Point artists have their living and studio space under one roof, Open Studios can be considered 'risky.' Yet the artists' open doors were an invitation to feel comfortable asking questions.
  • What does your art mean to you?
  • How do you approach a new piece?
  • What techniques do you use?
  • And many questions about how specific pieces were created
The photos demonstrate clearly the quality of the Fort Point Arts Community.

Ask Me - Works by ICA Visitor Assitants
Oct 27 - Nov 11, 2012

Ask - Works of Art by ICA Visitor AssistantsThe Institute of Contemporary Art visitor assistants (also known as gallery guards) have long (for years) talked about curating an exhibition of their own work.

After all, the work of "guarding" ICA artwork is the work of artists who can also hold intelligent conversations about the exhibit with ICA visitors.

Now fully defined and organized, the show will feature creative works by approximately 30 ICA VA's at The Howard Art Project,  1486 Dot Ave beginning Oct 27 and running through Nov 11, 2012.

The opening reception on Oct 27, 6-9 PM is an especially good time to plan to support these budding and dedicated artists.

October 27th through November 11th
Opening Reception Saturday, October 27th 6-9pm
Open Sat & Sun 12-4pm or by appointment

Bird St Youth Center
Bird Street Youth Councils - Growing Community Leaders

Authored by 13-year-young Jada Cassamajor, this article on the Bird Street Youth Councils reflects the quality care provided by the Bird St Youth Center for its youth and, reciprocally, the enthusiasm the youth  exhibit in wanting to grow into the future leaders of the community.

The Bird St Youth Council is designed to connect youth to residents, help them learn how to speak out on issues that they care about, and it offer opportunities for youth to give back.

Learn more about Jada, the Youth Councils and a great photo as well.

Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre - Strong Opening for 27th Season
Jose Mateo BalletOct 12, 2012

Every year during the holidays, the Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre Company shares their artistry with Uphams Corner, offering several performances of the Nutcracker ballet at the Strand Theatre.  But that is months away.

What the Mateo Ballet is offering the Boston community today is the opening program for their 27th season. Entitled "Mysterious Arrangements," their season debut runs through October 28 at The Sanctuary Theatre in Harvard Square.   Consisting of three works, the program concludes with a Mateo Ballet premiere, "Taking Turns", based on Philip Glass's "String Quartet #4".

"Mysterious Arrangements" is thrilling and engaging both at intellectual and sensual levels - unparalleled choreography unfolding barely a breath away and a crowd expressing their warmth and enthusiastic enjoyment of the performance at every opportunity.

Well worth the evening and a taste of good things to come to Uphams Corner.

Stein and Johnson - Winners of the Best Presidential Debate in 2012
Oct 6, 2012
Jill Stein Gary Johnson

If you missed the NPR October 6th ten minute debate between two better known, third-party presidential candidates, then you missed the best presidential debate yet in this 2012 Fall election season.

Jill Stein, the Green Party candidate and Gary Johnson, the Libertarian Party nominee, gently duked it out in truly light-hearted style in what were 30 second response time periods while addressing what they each believe are very serious issues confronting the United States.

While either one is unlikely to become president in 2013, their ideas on how to reform this country are worth contemplating, especially in the absence of a better debate.

Residents ask for Help with St. Kevin's
Oct 8, 2012

St. Kevin School A group of residents concerned about the St. Kevin's Redevelopment project asked for help understanding the status of the project.  They also wanted assistance writing letters expressing their concerns.

The Improvement Association (UCIA) met with the residents, providing a history of the project.  They also emphasized a need for the residents to focus on the bigger picture - the future of Uphams Corner - not just St. Kevin's.

UCIA brought up the 2009 SKAPC Visioning Report (St. Kevin's Area Planning Collaborative) whch they said so effectively identified the needs of the community.

Each resident identified what issues concerned them the most for their letter writing campaign.

Planning for the 2012 Holidays has Begun
Oct 4, 2012

Holiday Planning 2012 Uphams Corner Main Street has begun planning for November / December holiday events - decorating in the community, the tree lighting on November 24th and a Holiday Party on December 8 (tentatively) at the Strand Theatre.

Last year (2011), the Uphams Corner Improvement Association sponsored a Holiday Celebration at the Strand as part of the tree lighting.  The holiday party, drawing community to engage in the tree lighting event, marked a long drought of lack luster tree lighting events in Uphams Corner.

Meanwhile, Uphams Corner Main Street had sponsored Small Business Saturday, so the day was filled with activity from early morning through dusk. This year, the goals are not only to have fun but to increase the participation of businesses, youth and residents in holiday activities and to improve the overall 'holiday' feel in Uphams Corner.

Improvement Association Reviews First Year
Sep 27, 2012

UCIAThe September 2012 of the Uphams Corner Improvement Association was held at 6:30pm on September 27 at the Dorchester Bay building, 594 Columbia Rd.

They began by reviewing their first year - actions taken, accomplishment and progress made towards effecting change in the community. Issuing Beautification awards is one of the best activities initiated because of its positive effect on the recipients.

They also discussed the balance between positive reinforcement to promote change vs how to treat those elements of the community that might benefit from "going to jail," - in particular, the attitudes of some business owners who do nothing to help maintain the exterior of their property.

The Fairmount Initiative was discussed in detail. UCIA decided they will be writing a letter to the BRA to express their opinions and concerns about a variety of Fairmount related topics.
