Sultry chanteuse Brandi Maxam recalls the heydays of  American Jazz, reminiscent of Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. The vibrant sound of her voice, accompanied by guitarist Logan Wright, echoes a 1930s speakeasy or a 1950s jazz club.

The Brandi Maxam and Logan Wright Jazz Duo plays standards, but also throws in some contemporary pop, even jazzy variations of modern indie rock.

Public Works was hard at work repairing trip hazards and areas of missing brick on the Uphams Corner sidewalks in the business district on Tuesday, August 14, 2012.

A cheerful lot, the crew was most willing to pose for photos and discuss their project. They had a list of all problem spots as called into the Mayor's Hotline or via Citzens Connect.  The areas to be repaired have to go through the proper procedures.

Uphams Corner News Recommends HP
Aug 2, 2012

HP Planet Partners HP does not pay us to say this.  In fact we pay them to buy product and services.  For well over a decade, Uphams Corner News has purchased our computer equipment and services from HP and we highly recommend the company.

Higher still on the list of priorities is the environment and movement away from a dependency on non-renewable resources and their product offspring.  Packaging is a perfect example.  One small step:  On a recent order of cartridges, HP shipped their product in a recyclable cardboard box and used paper for interior packing.

Better still was the surprise (yes plastic!) pouch that can be used to return the empty cartridges (free shipping) back to HP.  That's a lot better than driving to Best Buy to drop the cartridges in a bin along with batteries and what not where there is no guarantee regarding the final disposition.

DSNI Multicultural Festival - 28th Annual
August 18, 2012

DSNI Multicultural Festival 2012August 18 marks the 28th annual celebration of multicultural "ism" in Uphams Corner.  Not that Uphams Corner was trying to "BE" multicultural.  It has happened naturally.

The Uphams Corner community is a melting pot of ethnic diversity and the [DSNI] Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative is in the thick of participating in the beauty of the diverse culture that defines Uphams Corner so well.

Mary Hannon Park will be filled with a stage and performances (last year a dance contest), inflatables for the kids, face-painting for anyone brave enough and lots of music.

City to Roll Out New Posted Street Cleaning Program
August 2012

Good News.  How do you get posted street cleaning on your street?  Until recently, it required a petition with signatures from 2/3 of the property owners on the street.  The new City of Boston policy is much simpler:  JUST ASK.

If your street is not yet posted for a street cleaning time (signs stating day of week and time slot along with a notice that all cars must be removed or will be towed), call / email your Neighborhood Services rep and ask that your street be added to the list.

According to Flavio Daveiga, Dorchester roll out is planned for the Spring of 2013.

Lotus Touts for Uphams Corner
Jul 24, 2012

A phrase used by the British, "Lotus Touts" means Good Luck.

Recently a group of 21 expressions of advice under the title Lotus Touts has been passing through emails and the blogosphere.

As lovely as these expressions are, what was MORE FUN was to HAVE FUN and to rewrite them with Uphams Corner in mind.  We invite you to do the same.  Be bold and daring and don't take yourself (or Uphams Corner) too seriously.  Some examples . . .

When you say, 'I love you,' mean it.

I LOVE UPHAMS CORNER! and I mean it!

#7 Believe in love at first sight.

I loved the intersection of Dudley and Columbia Rd at first sight.

In disagreements, fight fairly. No name calling.

And if necessary, call on the Safe Street Team for help.

Boston Opera Collaborative
Jul 30, 2012

Uphams Corner News supports the Boston Opera Collaborative.  Their production of Orpheus in the Underworld was such a rare treat for Uphams Corner.  As the President of their Board stated in her introduction, this was the first time they had come to Dorchester.

Welcome and Welcome Back!

Consider donating to their cause to ensure that their programming is available to all of the Boston area. A word from the Boston Opera Collaborative:

"Please donate to our fundraiser.  What value do you give to having live operatic theater available at your fingertips? In this era of digital technology, what is the worth of an experience so fresh and immediate that it cannot be bottled up into an app?

Thanks so much for your help.  Can't tell you how much I appreciate your support."

Or make a donation directly at their website http://www.bostonoperacollaborative.org/support/
