Improvement Association Targets Business District for Cleanup

The Improvement Association, adamant about a cleaner and more presentable Uphams Corner, took on the business district on Dudley Street from Monadnock St east to Columbia Rd in cooperation with District 3 Public Works.  Great team work and beautiful results.  The work took place back in 2011 but the story was never published until now.  Pride!!

Committed to a Better Looking Uphams Corner

In September 2011 members of the Uphams Corner Improvement Association took on the project of cleaning up the business district from Monadnock Street  east toward Columbia Rd.  The focus was weeds, trash and the condition of the tree pits.  The project was done in cooperation with Public Works District 3 (Hancock St) who agreed to deliver fresh mulch after the tree pits were fully cleaned.

The work spanned three days with Larry Fabian, Courtney Curran and Nancy Conrad helping out.  The most amazing volunteer was a gentleman from the Victory House on Virginia Street.  A knock on the door and he said "Yes, I would be happy to help."  What a terrific worker he was.

The weeds were difficult to remove because they were of the type that survive in the tiniest nooks and crannies, holding on with strong root systems.  The surprising work was the tree pits.  So much trash including bottle caps, paper and broken glass was mixed into the soil and it was very tightly compacted.  The group removed the first couple inches of soil to allow space for a large quantity of mulch.

The photos below show the work being done, the conditions before and after.  People shown include Larry Fabian, Nancy Conrad, Victory House worker and Public Works employees.
