Holiday Planning in Uphams Corner 2012

Holiday Party 2011Uphams Corner Main Street and their Promotions Committee have begun planning for November / December holiday events - decorating in the community, the tree lighting on November 24th and a Holiday Party tentatively planned for December 8 at the Strand Theatre.

Tree lighting has been taking place in Uphams Corner for years.

Last year (2011), the Uphams Corner Improvement Association (UCIA) sponsored a Holiday Celebration, also at the Strand, in advance of the tree lighting.  The holiday party, drawing community to engage in the tree lighting event, marked a long drought of lack luster tree lighting events in Uphams Corner.

Meanwhile, Uphams Corner Main Street had sponsored Small Business Saturday, so the day was filled with activity from early morning through dusk.

This combination worked well.  Party goers brought gifts for the kids - recycling quality used toys and books was encouraged.  Food, comfortable seats and holiday caroling - mostly Christmas songs added to the enjoyment.  When Hal Cohen arrived, the group joined him in singing Chanukah songs. A party from 3-5pm, everyone waiting for Santa's trolley to arrive, then the tree lighting - a great day and everyone went home shortly after that.

Bigger, Broader and More Community Based in 2012

Using the successes of 2011, the UCS Promotions Committee is looking to expand the community's involvement in holiday activities. How can the community get involved? The goals are not only to have fun but increase the participation of businesses, youth and residents in holiday activities and to improve the 'holiday' feel in Uphams Corner.

November 24 Events

Small Business Saturday starting early and running all day.

Holiday Party 2011 The tree lighting falls on the same day as the Pilgrim Church 150th Anniversary Celebration. So instead of a holiday party on the 24th (which is also very early in the holiday season), Main Street has opted to have a small holiday event that culminates in the arrival of Santa's trolley and the lighting of the tree.  A fun way to spend the afternoon would be to put up holiday decorations in the business district followed by the holiday tree lighting at 5pm with hot chocolate and cookies.
  1. Identify where volunteers can decorate in the public realm to give visitors a feast for their eyes and residents a sense of pride
  2. Volunteer to decorate in Uphams Corner
  3. Participate in a small holiday gathering to celebrate Santa's trolley and the tree lighting
  4. Make ornaments for the Uphams Corner tree
  5. Engage the youth in activities
  6. Join the Promotions Committee and help with holiday activities
  7. Engage businesses to donate hot chocolate, cookies and water for the tree lighting
December 8 Holiday Party (Tentative)
  1. Identify groups to participate in the holiday party - youth, choirs, dance, skits, a Santa Claus, etc
  2. Design the party / event based on community involvement
  3. Design the flyer and schedule event promotion
  4. Gather donations to be used as gifts - for shelters, the elderly or just for the kids
  5. Create a songbook
  6. Locate equipment and other items needed for the party
  7. Help decorate the Strand for the party
