Grove Hall Library Holds Ice Cream Social

Posted: August 26, 2011     Nancy J Conrad

The Grove Hall branch of the Boston Public Library held its first annual Ice Cream Social on Friday, August 26, 2011.  With over 100 people in attendance, the affair was deemed successful, popular and fun.  Here's how it came about.

"What can we do to say thanks?"

That was a recent topic of conversation between Paul Edwards, Branch librarian and Maija Meadows, Children's librarian.  In fact their feelings represented all the staff at the Grove Hall Branch who love their library and its place in the community - the builiding, the Grove Hall neighborhood, the youth and youngun's, the parents and all the library patrons.

"What can we do to celebrate?  How can we let everyone know how grateful we are?" Grove Hall Ice Cream Social 8/26/11

What about a cookout?  Wouldn't that be great?  Hamburgers, hot dogs, relish, ketchup, buns, the smell of meat cooking on the grill.  Oh, but you would have to leave the library to do that.  Probably not a good idea.

What can we do inside the library - especially on a hot end-of-August dog day - that everyone would enjoy?  Yes! Let's invite the community into the library to celebrate, but what will guarantee an enjoyable and unforgetable event?

It didn't take long to get the right answer.  Ice cream!  Everyone likes ice cream.  How about an ice cream social?  And this in a building where it says: "Absolutely no food allowed!"  Well, there are exceptions to every rule especially when it comes to ice cream.

So the Grove Hall librarians reached out to the community to advertise the event, and they invited their community partners to set up information tables.  Amy Ryan, President of the Boston Public Library, agreed to come.  The scoopers?  Who else but two important political celebraties serving up the ice cream:  Boston City Councilor Tito Jackson and State Senator Sonia Chang-Diaz.

At the count of 2:30 on Friday, August 26, 2011 Paul Edwards climbed the magnificent stairs to the half-way mark and with the youth looking down from the second floor and looking up from the first floor, he thanked everyone for coming and invited us all to get in line for our favorite flavor - chocolate, vanilla or a little of both.

Let you in on a secret:  Between photos, guess what this reporter did.  DELICIOUS!
