Golden Broom Award to John HosmerIn a gesture of appreciation and fun, the Upham's Corner Improvement Association will be issuing "Golden Broom" awards to Upham's Corner businesses and residents who put forth special effort in maintaining a clean, well-swept and attractive "face" to the community.

At their November 2011 meeting, UCIA agreed that John Hosmer, proprietor of Dollar Store Plus at 775 Dudley Street, would receive the first "Golden Broom Award."

For years John has been putting out a trash barrel in front of his business, sweeping the sidewalk and putting the trash barrel back into the store at the close of the business day.  He does this quietly, almost without notice.

"Why not help the neighborhood and the business district?  I put out the barrel, bring it in at night.  The front of my business stays clean and everybody is happy."

UCIA member Catherine Larget-Caplan presented the award to Mr. Hosmer on November 10 and he accepted it in gratitude and with a smile.
