Getting Help - Official Boundaries Separating Districts B2 & C11 in Upham's Corner

Posted: December 15, 2010

We, the residents of Upham's Corner, are all aware that two Boston Police Department districts cover our city.  The exact boundaries, though, seem to be elusive, even to some of the police officers.

We thought we'd get a carefully crafted and thorough answer from the BPD Communications Department and that we did.
  • Elaine Driscoll, Director of Communications, Boston Police Department, provided a detailed description of the boundaries.
  • UC News then used this narrative to construct a map
  • Elaine then got Captain Sexton's (C-11) approval
Can't get better than that.  Thanks.

B2 and C11 Boundaries in Upham's Corner
In general, think of Columbia Road as the dividing line with some exceptions.
  • South of Melnea Cass and up to, but not including, Mass Ave is B-2.  [not Upham's Corner]
  • When you get to Edward Everett Square, you can think of Columbia Road as the continuation of Mass Ave
  • B2 picks up the West side of Columbia Road while C-11 gets the right side
  • When the Business district starts, B2 gets "all" of it
  • The business district starts at Anabel Street (Fire Department), so B2 gets both sides of Columbia Rd
  • At the Upham's Corner intersection, B2 gets both sides of Stoughton Street through #25 (Church of God)
  • When you get to Hancock Street, B2 gets both sides of Hancock Street up to and including Bird Street
  • When you get to Bird Street and Columbia Road, the boundaries split and the median separates B2 and C11
C-11 stops at 499 Columbia Rd(before Bird St) and starts again at 653 Columbia Rd.(after Annabel St) Stoughton St. up to #25 is on B-2, Hancock St. up to #23 on odd side, Hancock St. up to #26 on even side (to intersection of Bird/Jerome). These areas are all part of the business district. All of Bird St is on B-2.

AREA B: To begin at a point at the median of the Melnea Cass Boulevard and Massachusetts Avenue intersection, southeast on Massachusetts Avenue (excluding Massachusetts Avenue) to Columbia Road and Massachusetts Avenue, south on Columbia Road (using the median as the boundary) to Annabel Street. At this point Area B assumes responsibility for both sides of Columbia Road including the businesses on both Stoughton Street and Hancock Street considered to be part of the Uphams Corner commercial
district, to both sides of Bird Street . The boundary resumes at the median of Columbia Road at Bird Street and continues south to Washington Street.

AREA C: The median of Columbia Road serves as the boundary between Area B and Area C to Annabel Street where Area B assumes responsibility for the Uphams Corner commercial district (defined as all addresses on both sides of Columbia Road up to and including both sides of Bird Street and businesses on Stoughton Street and Hancock Street considered to be part of the Uphams Corner commercial district). At the intersection of Bird Street and Columbia Road, the median of Columbia Road resumes as the
boundary between Area B and Area C to Washington Street.
