Fresh Fridays Serving the Freshest, Healthiest Food in Dorchester

"Fresh Fridays" is the title of a six Friday evening event series lovingly "cooked up" by a collaboration between The Sustainability Guild and the Dorchester Community Food Co-op.

As of September 6, 2012, only two Fresh Fridays remain.  The September 7 event is once again at First Parish Church on Meetinghouse Hill.  A spacious, comfortable location, it provides the visitor the ambiance to enjoy the food, the company and the musical offering of the night.

The Second Fresh FridayFresh Fridays, Serving the Freshest and Healthiest Food in Dorchester

There's a new wave happening in Dorchester - a movement toward sustainability, healthy food choices and lifestyles and the growth of community.  The Fresh Fridays events tap into all of these qualities and more.

The Second Fresh Friday was very successful despite the threat of a tornado and torrential rains.  Over 80 people came out to First Parish Church in Dorchester.  With lights set on "low" and ambiance provided by a 3-person band, fans of Fresh Friday came from as far away as Reading and as nearby as across the street.

Opportunities to meet new people, catch up with friends and experience an evening of colorful, aesthetic, wondeful smelling and best of all, delicious tasting food.   On the menu (and available as free recipies) were the following:
  • Jamaican Callaloo
  • Chili-lime chicken
  • Quinoa salad with lime-cumin vinaigrette
  • Carrot beet salad with ginger vinaigrette
  • Vietnamese stir-fried green beans
  • Carrot beet salad with ginger vinaigrette
  • Mango cucumber salsa
  • Peach cobbler for dessert
  • (To drink) watermelon agua fresca
This visitor could not get enough of the watermelon fresca - light, bubbly, refreshing.

Conversation with Jhana Senxian of the Sustainability Guild

The Sustainability Guild and the Dorchester Community Food Co-op are equally responsible for having put together Fresh Fridays.  Jhana is on the board of the food co-op and she is the founder of the Sustainability Guild.

The last Fresh Friday will be quite a celebration.  They are closing down Coleman Street.  It will be a community banquet with tables in the middle of the street and live music.

As far as the food is concerned, "We reached out to the regional farms and urban farms - far and wide.  They donated produce which we used to fill the plots in the Coleman Community Garden.  The whole neighborhood has been growing food and herbs all summer and that is what has been used to cook the food served on Fresh Fridays."
