Twelve
local elected officials consisting of all of Boston's minority
legislators and city councilors as well as the newly appointed Suffolk
County Sheriff Steve Tompkins signed a letter addressed to the
Committee designated to manage the process of determining new school
choice plans for the City of Boston.
The group is
collectively asking for more time for families and advocates to review,
understand and offer feedback on the most recent school assignment
plans developed by the External Advisory Committee on School Choice
(EAC).
The External Advisory Committee appears to be pushing for a fast close
to their efforts as shown in the rapid sequence of scheduled events:
- Most recent plans released Thursday, January 28, 2013
- Public meetings held February 4 and 5 (only two working days later)
- EAC scheduled to vote on a plan Saturday, February 9 (less than one week later)
February 4, 2013
Dear EAC members,
Let us start by thanking you for your thoughtful dedication, time and energy that you have invested in
this process over the last year to revamp the school assignment process.
As you know the most recent maps were unveiled this past Thursday January 28th . We have heard from
constituents, stakeholders and most importantly families about their need for more time to review and
understand the most recent plans.
We respectfully ask for an extension in your final recommendation to
the school committee to accommodate this. We ask that you delay the
scheduled February 9th vote to recommend plans to the School Committee.
Again, we thank you for your work and consideration.
Sincerely,
