Dunkin Donuts - Styrofoam is Eco-Unfriendly

Dunkin' Donuts Coffee and Coffee Cups

Dunkin Donuts is "everybody's" favorite coffee shop.  Found within walking distance of almost all urban environments, DD serves coffee that is predictable and consistent.  You already know what you are planning to buy as you make your way to the back of the long lines in the store.

Goal?  Make that "thirsty" feeling fade.

Dunkin' Donuts is a Massachusetts based company.  On the Dunkin' Donuts brands website, they state their claim of responsibility to the planet: "We recognize that everything we do has an impact on the environment. From the materials we use, to the way we construct and operate our stores, we are committed to adopting better, more sustainable approaches whenever possible."

Yet they persist in the use of Styrofoam cups.

City of Boston and Recycling

The City of Boston's Recycling Directory (pdf) is an excellent resource for knowing the best way to get "in synch" with the City's commitment to recycling and a greener future. It includes a letter from Mayor Menino, an explanation of the concept of single stream recycling, the use of recycling carts issued by the City or, if those are too big to handle, how to create your own recycling cart, what can / cannot be recycled, hazardous waste programs and electronics recycling.  A heavy emphasis is placed on DO NOT TRASH if you don't have to.  Give your clothes and furniture away; don't throw it away.
City of Boston - Unacceptable Recycling Materials
GUESS WHAT!!

Styrofoam is on the City of Boston's "Unacceptable Materials" list.  So now that the City has rolled out its new Big Belly trash/recycling bin combos, pedestrians will be encouraged to trash responsibly - separate what can be recycled from what cannot be recycled.

For the many people who imagine that ALL plastics can be recycled, they will likely dump the DD coffee cup into the recycling part of that trash duo, but it will be WRONG.

Paul Kalinka - Friend to the Environment

According to Change.org, Paul Kalinka (lives in MI not MA) is a self-described "friend to the environment" and daily drinker of Dunkin' Donuts coffee. That's why he was especially concerned after learning on Dunkin' Donuts' website just how many styrofoam cups are sent to the landfill each year. So Paul started a petition on Chang.org

Quinn Eureka from Jamaica Plain, MA wrote in (late Aug 2012)

"I see people walking around with iced coffees in plastic cups inside styrofoam "holders" every day downtown. It is disgusting. DD's should encourage patrons to use a napkin or sleeve to catch the condensation or better yet, bring their own reusable cup.

Giving a 10 cent discount to reusable cup users and eliminating the styrofoam cups will certainly lead to a positive bottom line and improve DD's image."

Dear Dunkin

Dunkin' Donuts is the worlds leader in baked goods and coffee. They also bill themselves as America's favorite brand of coffee. Both of these statements may indeed be true, but they are not the environment's favorite brand of coffee. Dunkin' Donuts still serves their coffee in styrofoam cups. The amount of styrofoam cups used at their stores is shocking.

Believe me; I love the coffee at Dunkin' Donuts. I get my coffee there every day. So maybe we all need a reminder of why the volume of this styrofoam is so bad... Dunkin' Donuts' website cites that American consumption of coffee alone is 488 million cups per year!!! While it takes 100 cups to equal 1 pound, that still works out to 4,880,000 pounds of trash -- trash that is mostly styrofoam! The worst part is that is this only references consumption in the United States. Worldwide, the amount of waste generated is astronomical.

What's worse is what's in that trash. Styrofoam in the environment poses a threat to all of us. At Dunkin' Donuts, we are drinking from a cup made of pollutants and are putting so much of it back into our Earth.

On the Dunkin' Donuts brands website, they state their claim of responsibility to the planet: "We recognize that everything we do has an impact on the environment. From the materials we use, to the way we construct and operate our stores, we are committed to adopting better, more sustainable approaches whenever possible."

According to statements made by Dunkin' Donuts last September (9/16/2011), Dunkin' Donuts would be replacing styrofoam but has not created a timetable.  View article It is time for them to get styrofoam out of their stores for good.

Concerned about Dunkin' Donuts & Styrofoam cups - there has to be a better way.

Steve Spacek

McDonald's was sued over this in the 1980's and lost. Surprised Dunkin is foolishly imposing a once-resolved problem back onto the consuming public that surely will lead to an injurious lawsuit, and a verbal lashing to Dunkin's lawyers from the courtroom's presiding judge.
