We also will have workshops on gardening as well as on health and wellness.
As a cooperative business, consumers and workers will be its owners.

Why locate the store in Roxbury or Dorchester?

Communities is these neighborhoods have been embracing community gardening and increasing the number of community garden plots. Gardening is good exercise, promotes healthy eating, is more affordable and accessible than buying produce at the store, and builds community. DotRox Co-operative Gardening Center

Currently there are few options in which to purchase outdoor gardening supplies in many neighborhoods where people live and garden. Also many ethnic communities are unable to easily find items that they would like.

Things we need to do?
  • Outreach to neighbors, friends, and family in multiplelanguages.
  • Develop communications tools (flyers, website, etc.).
  • Develop store mission and bylaws.
  • Recruit board members.
  • Select preferred location for store.
  • Research different cooperative models.
  • Identify products to be sold and supply vendors.
  • Write business plan.
  • Meet, meet, & meet to discuss all of the above and more.
What is a cooperative business ("co-op")?

A co-op is typically a for profit business that is owned by its members. Members may be consumers (shoppers), workers, or both. All pay a fee to become a share-holder (one-time fee or annual fee).

Share-holders receive one vote at member meetings. Members have equal status and power to elect a board that oversees the business. They may also vote on additional items in which the board instructs the members to vote.
