Uphams
Corner is Changing & so is the Strand
Uphams Corner is changing under a multi-pronged effort that seeks to
both explore and identify the essential nature of the community.
Under Mayor Menino's commitment to restoring the Strand Theatre, this
grand institution continues to lay claim to its anchor position within
the business community.
With no competition, the Strand is not only the anchor for any
possibility of economic revitalization in Uphams Corner but it is also
a symbol of the "buzz" - that Uphams Corner will become (is
becoming)
a destination for the arts.
A Proud History
Imagine how proudly the Strand stood on the day it
opened as a
palace in
1918, ushering in the Roaring '20's. How many years of vibrant history
the Strand has witnessed in its close to 100 years of existence!
How
many people have passed through its doors!
The fedora, a felt
hat popular in the 1920's, became
associated with gangsters and Prohibition. Today, with its
distinctive lines and formality, many people express their uniqueness
by donning a fedora.
Like
the decades of characters who have graced the stage and seats of the
Strand, the fedora symbolizes a different time, a grander time.
When you enter the
Strand Theatre, carry your imaginary or real fedora with you. Allow
yourself to hearken back to days of yore then gently returning to the
theater's
beauty today.
Journey into Genius
Not only does the Strand Theatre have the potential for becoming a
community Center for the Arts for all of Boston, but it has the ability
to invite each of
us individually on a journey as we enter its halls - a
journey that frees us to be in touch with our genius and our creative
spirits.
We dare you! Take inspiration from the many famous and infamous
individuals who have worn their fedoras well, some examples
including: Ne-Yo, Ving Rhames, Michael Jackson,
Humphrey Bogart, Beyonce, Frank
Sinatra, Diane Kruger, and Baby Zoe Berman.
Don your own version of the fedora hat and, gaily
dressed
to the hilt, walk through the doors of the Strand Theatre for yet
another amazing
performance. Transport yourself to a world where you are the star.
