City of Boston Recycling Program "Springs" Into Action

Overview

Every Spring, City of Boston Public Works offers a "Spring Leaf and Yard Waste" program and advertises the program using tiny "hanging" flyers distributed to all households. This year at least one street was missed, but Recycling quickly notified their vendor - problem solved.

From April 29 through May 24, the City will pickup your separated yard waste which prevents such waste from going to landfills and provides useful mulching and composting material for the City.

Spring is Already Here

As of April 8, Spring was officially here. To encourage early recycling, Boston's Public Works Department was promoting its "Spring Leaf and Yard Waste" program. Everyone should have known about the annual program because, at least theoretically, a vendor hired by the City was supposed to have delivered cute little flyers to every household in the City by April 5.

That is, if the vendor had done their job.

The free city program is a follow-up to the fall yard waste collection program and addresses to additional accumulation of leaves and other yard waste left over from last year. The program runs from April 29 thru May 24 and is a great way to prepare the yard for reseeding the lawn, cleaning out the bushes and preparing the soil for flowers.

The tiny flyer says: "Spring Leaf and Yard Waste Collection 4 Week. If you don't have time to compost your leaves or yard debris this spring, Boston Public Works Department will do it for you."

Flyers East of Columbia Rd are Everywhere

Across Columbia Rd in East Uphams Corner, it was easy to find the flyers, often in groups of three, attached to the entry gates with elastics and sometimes lying on the sidewalks. On the west side of Columbia Rd, on at least one street, Monadnock Street, they were nowhere to be found.

The City's response to the "complaint" was fast and effective. Susan Cascino, Recycling Director, sent back an email: "Thank you for calling this matter to my attention. I have spoken to the vendor. He will get it done tomorrow or early next week."

Yes, indeed. As of Monday, Monadnock Street joined the ranks of residences who now know about the recycling program. Let's hope everyone participates.
