Boston Classical Celebrates the Season at the Strand 2011

Kim McLarin, host of "Celebrates the Season" on December 12, 2011 at the Strand Theatre, welcomed the performers and guests, and announced that this year she did not have to "sing for her supper" as she did last year.  Everyone laughed.

The Boston Classical Orchestra, under Music Director Stephen Lipsitt, performed excerpts from the Messiah and the Nutcracker and following that, songs from the lighter side:  "Winter Wonderland," "Chestnuts Roasting " and "The Chanukah song."

BCO shared the stage with the Strings of the Pope John Paul II Catholic Academies who, under Mary Swanson, not only played to cherubic perfection but commanded a hushed awe from the audience as the younguns' moved their bows through "Silent Night" and "Joy to the world."

Vocalist Khamari Barnes of the Boston Children's Chorus treated us to a couple seasonal favorites, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "Santa Claus is Coming to Town."

Finally, despite the dimmed the lights, the audience sang with gusto in the Christmas Carol Sing-Along: "O come, All Ye Faithful," "In the Bleak Midwinter," "Hark!  The Herald Angels Sing" and "Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly."

The evening was a short but sweet interlude in what can be a maddening holiday season.  As a testament to their grace and generosity, the Boston Classical Orchestra collaborated with local artistic young people and helped to strengthen Dorchester’s commitment to the arts.

Missing from the evening's performance was Sean Roberts who, as Executive Director in 2010, arranged the first BCO concert at the Strand.  He recently passed away but is dearly remembered.  The 2nd Annual concert was funded and dedicated in his honor.

Upham's corner, the Strand Theatre and all of Dorchester were truly blessed.
